A recent article in Motor Trend points to the possibility of adding a diesel V8 option to the CTS lineup.
As long as Cadillac uses the raised hood of the CTS-V, they can squeeze GM's 4.5L Duramax V8 into the engine bay. The engine produces 310-hp and 520 lb-ft of torque, but could get a special CTS-tune for sporty driving. The diesel model would slot in between the 304-hp base model and the 556-hp CTS-V. Performance would be on par with the base gasoline engine, but it would return 20-25% better fuel economy. This would help GM meet the mandated 35 mpg CAFE regulations by 2020. This could be a good move for Cadillac as it appears that Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz already have released or are working on diesel models.

On the heels of hearing that GM will be closing their Moraine, Ohio plant, word is now out that they will be closing their Janesville, Wisonsin plant.
GM had originally announced it would close down the Janesville plant before 2010 ... insiders now say that the plant will close in December 2008. The plant makes the GMC Yukon alongside the Chevy Tahoe, and the Chevy Suburban. GM will also be closing a 2-million square foot metal stamping plant near Grand Rapids, Michigan in a effort to cut costs.

Micheline Maynard, writing for the New York Times, reports that Toyota is seriously considering making the Prius a separate brand to Toyota all together.
The Prius brand, if approved, would be sold in Toyota dealerships. In addition to the current Prius, Toyota would also work on a smaller, perhaps Yaris-sized Prius, and a larger "Prius on steroids". A crossover Prius is not out of the question. The idea is the brainchild of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. president James E. Lentz III. He is currently lobbying the head office in Japan and the ultimate decision will be made by them.

According to the New York Times, Chrysler has been in talks for at least a month with GM over a possible merger.
Should it happen it would undoubtedly help both manufacturers as GMs stocks have recently dropped below $5.00 a share and Chrysler, which is privately owned by Cerebrus, is weathering it's own financial storm. The merger would create the world's largest automaker, and would control over 35% of North American vehicles. Of course the companies are being very tight lipped about all this ... GM rarely talks about it's dealings publically, and Cerebrus, which is a privately held company, never discloses the subject of their board meetings.

JD Power and Associates have warned of a possible "outright collapse" in the automotive sector in 2009 due to the economic situation and a lack of available credit.
Worldwide automotive sales are declining, part of the reason in North America is the drop in leasing activity ... leasing has become too high risk, and a drop in fleet sales . This sales decline has made it a buyer's market ... but banks are less willing to lend.

Stock prices plummeted yesterday for Ford and GM as the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed below 9,000 at 8,579.19 for a one-day drop of 678.91.
GM stock dropped to $4.94 (having been as low as $4.72 just minutes earlier), the lowest they've been in 50 years. Ford stocks finished the day at $2.14, ironically, cheaper than a gallon of gas.

After Porsche made claims that Nissan used a non-production version of it's GT-R supercar to lap the Nurburgring in 7:29, Nissan has rebutted with it's own statement.
Essentially they say that production tires were used and a Japanese spec car was used. The lap time was witnessed by "Best Motoring" magazine and anybody who would like to see the actual tires from the 7:29 car can contact Nissan Public Relations. Further, they are well aware that other car companies have purchased GT-Rs and are testing them on their own ... performance driving courses are available upon request. See the full Nissan statement after the jump.
